Nyköping Vatten reduces energy with Hydroscand services
Compressed air is vital in many industrial and municipal operations – but it also comes with a hidden cost. Studies show that up to 30 percent of all compressed air can be lost through undetected leaks, leading to unnecessary energy consumption and higher emissions. To address this, Hydroscand offers Energy Optimization and Leak Detection services that help customers reduce energy losses and make their operations more sustainable.
One organisation that has recently taken advantage of this expertise is Nyköping Vatten, a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Sweden. The facility uses compressed air for several critical functions – to control valves, stir sludge tanks, aerate water basins, and power mammoth pumps. Over time, these systems can develop leaks that are difficult to locate but have a significant impact on both energy efficiency and operational reliability.
To gain a clear picture of the energy losses and how they could be reduced, Nyköping Vatten engaged Hydroscand as a trusted local partner. Using advanced equipment and detailed measurement methods, the Hydroscand team performed a full analysis of the plant’s compressed air system. The results showed several major leaks that contributed to high energy costs and unnecessary CO₂ emissions.
After the analysis, the identified leaks were repaired, and a comprehensive action plan was developed to ensure continued efficiency and operational safety. Although it is still too early to measure the full effect, the initial results are promising. The initiative is expected to result in energy savings of 50–70 percent and a reduction of CO₂ emissions by 5–6 tons per year.
Hydroscand’s Energy Optimization service includes detailed measurement of compressed air consumption, air quality and energy use to identify areas for improvement. Combined with Leak Detection, which locates and quantifies air leaks using advanced acoustic technology, customers gain a complete overview of their system’s performance. By addressing inefficiencies and preventing future leaks, organisations can achieve long-term cost savings while contributing to reduced environmental impact.
For Nyköping Vatten, the collaboration with Hydroscand marks an important step in the municipality’s wider sustainability efforts – demonstrating how targeted actions can lead to measurable results and a more energy-efficient operation.
